Deciduous tree stumps allow for the harvest of numerous species of wood decay fungi. First-stage decay agents (Oyster Mushrooms) are replaced over the years by second-stage decay agents (Late Oyster Mushrooms and Honey Mushrooms) and third-stage decay agents (mould and bacteria). Fungi dispose of large amounts of wood in the root system on which to feed, leading to fructification on and around stumps on the surface.
