Fairy Ring Mushroom
Marasmius Oreades
Edibility
XS - S

The Fairy Ring Mushroom is known for developing mycelium in shiro formation that grow a few cm each year, while the older mycelium in the centre wither and die. Fruit bodies develop from the youngest parts of the mycelium to produce witches’ circles 1 on the surface.

The first photo shows the growth of a fairy circle that took place over a period of thirty years 1. Only caps in good condition 3 can be eaten. They are most flavourful when dried, as they take on the taste of wild hazelnuts; in powdered form, they are used to season a variety of dishes. The stems are woody and should be rejected.

The Fairy Ring Mushroom is recognized by its growth in shiro; a small, often hummocky cap 4; widely-spaced gills of various lengths 3; and fibrous stem. Old or damaged fruit bodies 5 are left at the site.

This mushroom causes headaches for lovers of a perfect lawn and there are few ways to get rid of it. If the work is done by contractors, the spores travel to neighbours’ yards, and the Fairy Ring Mushroom flourishes.
